On Oct. 18, Shawn Lee Brunson appeared in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn in order to schedule a trial date for a February vehicular manslaughter case.
Brunson, 34, is charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, theft between $1,500 and $25,000, unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle and driving a car without a license.
Previous issues between Phinn and Brunson’s defense attorney, Warren A. Brown led Brown to request removal from the case, but that was rejected by Judge Althea M. Handy.
Gregory Fischer from the Baltimore Office of the Public Defender was present at the hearing and was prepared to represent Brunson in case Brown wasn’t
He stated, “I am prepared to enter my appearance today,” and with that, Brunson’s representation was transferred to Fischer.
According to Baltimore Witness, on Feb. 8, Brunson was driving a stolen vehicle, and when police began to pursue him, he crashed into another vehicle on the corner of East North Avenue and Wolfe Street. The momentum continued onto the sidewalk, where 54-year-old Alfred Fincher was hit and further injured by a collapsing row home.
Judge Phinn scheduled his trial to begin on Feb. 20, 2024, before Judge Anthony F. Vittoria.
