Suspect Who Claimed Mistaken Identity Sentenced to 17 Years for Attempted Murder

A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Sept. 20 after he was convicted of shooting another person in the head two years ago.

In March, a jury found Marvin Edmonds guilty of attempted second-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, firing a gun in Baltimore City and illegal possession of ammunition as well as two counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction in connection to the shooting on Feb. 19, 2022, on the 1600 block of East Eager Street.

The victim survived.

During the proceeding before Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer, Edmonds was sentenced to 30 years for attempted second-degree murder, a consecutive 20 years for firearm use in a felony or violent crime, a consecutive 15 years suspended for firearm possession with a felony conviction, a consecutive one year suspended for firing a gun in Baltimore City and a consecutive one year suspended for illegal possession of ammunition. Edmonds’ total sentence comes to 50 years, suspending all but 17 years, in addition to five years of supervised probation.

Edmonds is currently scheduled to return to court on Oct. 11.

Text messages between Edmonds and the 39-year-old victim showed the defendant’s intent to kill, the prosector said, which included a photo of himself outside of the victim’s home and a photo of a gun in his lap. Although defense counsel Rodney Gray and his client claimed Edmonds’ nephew was behind the shooting, the prosecution said there wasn’t any evidence of that.

Gray argued that the Baltimore Police Department(BPD) did not investigate further into Edmonds’ nephew’s alleged involvement, adding that Edmonds never left the city after the shooting.
