A Baltimore man facing attempted murder charges had his hearing postponed on Feb. 21 after the prosecutor stated defense counsel James Sweeting III was out on medical leave before Baltimore City City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland

During Tuesday’s hearing, Daykai Quarles rejected a plea of 30 years, suspending all but 15 years with five years of supervised probation for first-degree attempted murder and a consecutive five years without the possibility of parole for use of a firearm during a felony violent crime.

Quarles, 22, is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, discharging firearms, and reckless endangerment in connection to an incident on Aug. 10, 2022.

According to court documents, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 4400 block of Elderon Avenue for reports of a shooting. On arrival, officers spoke to the victim who said he was having an argument with his neighbor regarding a lawnmower,  when his neighbor’s son, Quarles, began shooting at him from a second-story window.

Unsure when Sweeting will return, Judge Copeland postponed the hearing until March.

Quarles’ next hearing was scheduled to continue on March 20.
