On Dec. 18, a defendant in a non-fatal shooting case accepted a plea deal before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong.

Jermall Mayo, 38, pleaded guilty to having a handgun on his person and firing a gun. He faces five years in prison for the first charge, suspending two years, and a concurrent year for the second charge. Mayo also faces two years of supervised probation and must register as a gun offender. He was convicted in connection to an incident that occurred on June 23, 2023.

The state had originally offered Mayo a shorter sentence of four years for the first charge and a concurrent year for the second charge. Mayo and defense attorney Michael Cooper rejected the plea deal at a Sept. 17 hearing.

Cooper testified on behalf of Mayo’s character, calling him “productive” and noting his active contributions to society. Mayo, who previously studied computer support systems and possesses an interstate commercial driver’s license, worked at an Amazon warehouse and was a Lyft driver.

CCTV footage recovered by investigators captured Mayo pointing a black revolver at the following a physical altercation. Cooper said Mayo did not appear to know how to operate the revolver.

Mayo collapsed briefly during the hearing, but said he did not need medical attention.
