Xyliq Synzere, an 18-year-old charged with two counts of first-degree murder and additional firearm violations linked to the murder of 22-year-old Trey Sanders, appeared in reception court on Feb. 20. The intent was to discuss potential trial dates and discrepancies regarding a not criminally responsible (NCR), or not guilty by reason of insanity, filing that was missing from court records.
Defense attorney Matthew Connell requested a new pre-trial conference date to place the missing NCR filing on the record.
According to the prosecution, the defense sent prior confirmation that the filing had been completed for competency evaluation pending trial. Upon reviewing the records, however, the state’s attorney had been unable to locate the documentation. He urged the court to ensure the NCR filing would be placed on the record at the new pre-trial conference, citing the integrity of the case.
Without co-counsel, Connell could not provide further clarification regarding the matter.
Judge Copeland directed both attorneys to coordinate an alternative pre-trial date.
As counsel had previously discussed and agreed upon potential trial dates in late July, Judge Copeland agreed to set Synzere’s trial to begin July 23 before Judge Michael A. DiPietro. Proceedings are expected to last seven days.
With no comments from Synzere, the meeting was concluded.
