Trial concluded Sept. 15 for Alexis Oscar Cancel-Soto, 20, who stands accused of murdering Cameran Holt, 19, and injuring another victim during a shooting that occurred Oct. 27, 2024, in a Federal Hill parking lot.
Daeshaun Tyreke Clark, 27, and Devontaye Richardson, 29, are also charged in this case.
The night of the incident, a man reportedly entered a parking lot and threatened Cancel-Soto and his companions with a firearm. Defense attorney Marci T. Johnson argued that any shots fired by Cancel-Soto were in self-defense against this “hot-headed” man, and not targeted at Holt.
The prosecution reminded the jury that even if Cancel-Soto did not intend to kill Holt, he could still be found guilty of first-degree murder through transferred intent. He argued Cancel-Soto aimed to kill the aggressive man, but fatally shot Holt instead, releasing 33 cartridge casings from his 9mm firearm in the process. General intent to kill is enough to be found guilty of first-degree murder, say prosecutors.
Furthermore, the prosecution highlighted Cancel-Soto’s inconsistent statements throughout both the investigation and the trial.
“He’s had over a year to make up his story, and he couldn’t even get it right during this trial,” they said.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Nicole K. Barmore presided over the case. The jury is currently deliberating.
