On May 9, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Dana M. Middleton agreed to incarcerate a manslaughter defendant for one month.

Defense attorneys Janet K. Andersen and Robert A. Cohen appeared before Judge Middleton to explain that defendant Brittany Nicole Julius suffers from ongoing pulmonary concerns.

Due to the gravity of Julius’ health concerns, the prosecution offered a plea of 10 years, suspending all but 18 months with one month of incarceration and 17 months of home detention for vehicular manslaughter.

Victim Douglas Charles Cromwell’s  daughter said that her father was a “loving man who wouldn’t want her [Julius] to undergo harsher punishment due to her health concerns.”

The defense attorneys told the court that Julius, 30, takes responsibility for her “grossly negligent” actions and accepted the plea.

Julius was charged with vehicular manslaughter and criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter in connection to an incident that happened on Jan. 4, 2021. On that day, Julius was traveling 56 mph in a 30 mph zone. The defendant crossed over two concrete medians in an attempt to overcorrect, hitting another car and crashing into the victim.

Judge Middleton granted the plea and set a disposition hearing for July 18.
