On Feb. 23, a 17-year-old charged with shooting five people a little over a year ago attended court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John A. Howard.

Daaon Spears is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, first- and second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person, possession of a firearm as a minor and illegal possession of a regulated firearm.

Defense attorney Robert Linthicum requested  a postponement as he indicated there was an unspecified conflict of interest. Judge Howard approved this request and sent Spears to Judge Melissa K. Copeland to receive the next trial date. The next time Spears will appear in court is July 24.

Court documents state that the incident occurred on Jan. 4, 2023. Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to a report of a “serious shooting” on the 4000 block of Edmondson Avenue. At the scene, five victims were found injured and sent to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and Sinai Hospital. Deanta Dorsey, 16, was the only victim who died.

Witnesses allegedly identified Spears through surveillance footage.

On Feb. 15, 2023, a search and seizure warrant was executed by police officers, which resulted in Spears’ arrest.
