Opening Statements Presented in Homicide After a Dog Fight

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Videtta A. Brown heard opening statements on April 24 in a homicide that took place after a dog fight.

Tyyea Gee, 39, faces two counts of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and firearm possession with a felony conviction in connection to the death of 37-year-old Ronnie Gibson on Jan. 13, 2023. 

According to the prosecution, a confrontation ensued after a dogfight on the 800 block of Stoll Street. Gee’s girlfriend’s dog started fighting with another dog in a back alley, leading to a heated exchange between Gee and a woman who had pulled up in her car.

Gee and the woman in the car argued before she drove away, later returning with a man identified as Gibson. 

According to an eyewitness, as Gibson when was causing a scene, Gee and a few other men approached him. Gibson then took off down the street. According to the prosecution, this is when Gee and a co-conspirator chased him down the block with handguns, shooting and killing him.

The assistant state’s attorney told the jury a Baltimore city Crime Watch camera picked up some of the altercation, but its view was unable to capture the shooting. 

Gee’s defense attorney, James Sweeting III, claimed there were multiple inconsistencies in the prosecution’s theory of the case. He implored the jury to not make any assumptions about who is responsible for the crime, citing there was no evidence to show Gee committing the shooting. 

Testimony is expected to continue during the next several days.
