A non-fatal shooting defendant received praise from Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin on Sept. 8 for his progress following a plea agreement he accepted earlier this summer.

Thurston Mayo, 35, attended mental health court on Wednesday for a status update. The Ellicott City resident has attended mental health court four times in the past few months for similar updates before Judge Rasin.

Mayo took a plea deal of six years, suspending all but time served, and three years probation for first-degree assault on May 19, after shooting at a neighbor who was setting off fireworks on the 6600 block of Eberle Drive on the Fourth of July last year. Additional charges in his case included first and second-degree assault, firearm use in a violent crime, discharging firearms, and two counts of reckless endangerment.

On Wednesday, Judge Rasin said Mayo continues to be compliant with his treatment. Mayo also informed the court that he is taking classes in Howard County and is looking forward to continuing his progress.

“I’m really delighted you have taken the initiative to enroll in classes,” Judge Rasin said.

Mayo is scheduled to return to mental health court for another status update on Oct. 6.
