The trial of attempted homicide defendant Isiah Jewel was postponed on May 11 after defense counsel argued he received late discovery from the prosecution.
Jewel is currently facing first and second-degree attempted murder, assault, and weapons charges in connection to a shooting on the 200 block of North Kenwood Avenue on July 7, 2022.
Judge Timothy Doory was set to preside over the 30-year-old defendant’s trial on May 10, when jury selection was scheduled to begin. However, defense attorney Hunter Pruette requested to hold the case over until Thursday to address a personal matter.
Jewel and counsel returned to court the following day when Pruette argued that he had recently received 70 videos from the prosecution and needed time to review the evidence before proceeding to trial. The defense attorney also motioned to exclude the late discovery and any witnesses pertaining to that evidence from the trial.
The prosecutor informed Judge Doory that the defense had received the majority of the videos but that additional evidence was not turned over to the prosecution from the Baltimore Police Department. Once the prosecution obtained the remaining evidence, he said, it was provided to defense counsel.
Judge Doory deemed it unrealistic to proceed with Jewel’s trial, given the evidence that Pruette needed to review alongside his client. The case was sent to Judge Melissa Copeland, who rescheduled the trial for May 25.
