A Baltimore man charged with first-degree murder had his trial date set before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn Oct. 25.
The defendant Garrett Smith is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, and having a loaded handgun on his person in connection to a crime perpetrated on Feb. 11.
Smith, 52, rejected a plea offered by the prosecution of life for first-degree murder and a concurrent sentence of 20 years for the use of a firearm in a felony violent crime.
According to the Baltimore Police Department, Smith was arrested in connection with the murder of 54-year-old Ahnmad Artis.
On the day of the murder, officers were called to the 1800 block of Ashburton Street at approximately 9:51 a.m., in response to a SpotShooter alert. It was there that they located Artis suffering from an eventually fatal gunshot wound.
Judge Phinn set Smith’s trial to begin on April 11, 2023, with Judge Kendra Y. Ausby presiding. The trial is expected to last for days.
