Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland granted a pre-trial date of May 9 for murder defendant Jermaine Sanders after his new defense attorney, Martin Cohen, requested more time to familiarize himself with the details of the case. Sanders is expected to receive a new trial date at the May hearing.
Sanders was found guilty by a jury of conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection to a March 29, 2020 incident that occurred in the 500 block of N. Curley Street and resulted in the death of Kimberly McCubbin, 30. A second victim was also located suffering from blunt force trauma wounds, but he survived. Initially, Sanders was also charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, and several other related assault and firearm charges.
His case was reopened for a retrial on Feb. 20 after Sanders’ previous defense attorney, Donald C. Wright, requested further time to review new evidence brought forth by the prosecution.
As Baltimore Witness reported on Feb. 20, Judge Lawrence R. Daniels approved the postponement after Wright protested the prosecution’s decision to send Sanders notice of intent to use his phone and email records as evidence just four days prior to his trial date. Wright claimed the prosecution’s actions deprived him and his client time to make necessary preparations.
Sanders did not object to Cohen’s request for postponement.
