The jury in 25-year-old Dion Thompson‘s murder case failed to reach a verdict, causing Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lynn S. Mays to declare a mistrial on April 1. Deliberations continued for hours before the panel was ultimately dismissed without resolution. The following day, Judge Melissa K. Copeland ordered a retrial date of Sept. 11.
Thompson is charged for the murder of Tony Mason, Jr., a 40-year-old sergeant with the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) on Nov. 4, 2017. Thompson faces two counts each of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and attempted first-degree murder, along with several other firearm-related charges.
The weeklong trial featured heated confrontations between defense attorney Robert A. Cohen and the prosecution about the accuracy of witness testimonies, among other issues, resulting in Judge Mays to clear the courtroom.
Thompson’s September trial is set to run five or six days.
