May Retrial Set for Defendant Accused of Shooting a Mother, Son on Medford Road

The retrial of attempted murder suspect Derrien Gamble was scheduled for May 2024 following a mistrial earlier this month.

Gamble, 20, received a partial conviction on Nov. 9 when he was found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and having a loaded handgun on his person after a two-day trial.

However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on charges of attempted first and second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, conspiracy to firearm use in a felony or violent crime and reckless endangerment.

On Nov. 30, the prosecution informed Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn that he did not currently have an offer. The prosecutor and defense attorney Andre Mahasa, standing in for James Sweeting III, agreed on a three-day trial to begin May 8, 2024.

Judge Phinn said a judge will be assigned to the case at a later date.

Gamble’s charges stem from an incident on Feb. 4 when a mother and son were shot on the 1500 block of Medford Road. Three suspects, including Gamble, allegedly approached the victims and opened fired when they were getting out of their vehicle.

During the defendant’s first trial, the prosecutor described the attack as “a coordinated ambush,” while Sweeting argued his client was the victim of misidentification.
