Man Pleads Guilty to Shooting in Fells Point Last Summer

Davon Matthews, 21, was sentenced on May 4 to time served and probation after pleading guilty to having a loaded handgun on his person.

Matthews previously faced several firearm charges for his connection to a July 12, 2025 shooting on the 400 block of S. Broadway. That day, police responded to the location, where they found a victim with a gunshot wound to his right leg. The victim was then transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Recovered surveillance footage showed the victim holding a glass bottle while approaching a group of unknown men and women. One of the men attempted to stop the victim, who dropped the bottle and picked up an advertisement pole. The group then began to flee, but the victim struck a woman among them who was pushing a stroller.

Shortly after, Matthews appeared and pushed the victim to the ground. As the victim stood and began approaching Matthews, the defendant withdrew a handgun and fired a single shot at the victim’s leg.

After Matthews was arrested on Dec. 8, 2025, the prosecutor ultimately determined that he acted in self defense and dropped his attempted murder charge. The defendant was instead charged with possessing a loaded handgun and five other gun offenses.

On Monday, Matthews accepted a plea of five years, suspending all but 147 days of time already served. The maximum sentence in Maryland for carrying a loaded handgun is five years.

The defendant, who was represented by criminal defense attorney Roya Hanna, will also serve two years of supervised probation upon release.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin P. Welch presided over the hearing.

Meanwhile, Matthews is still awaiting trial for another shooting that occurred one month after the Fells Point incident. Police documents allege that near 1 a.m. on Sept. 14, 2025, the defendant shot an 18-year-old man in the right shoulder while in the Inner Harbor.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge M. Brooke Murdock is set to preside over the trial, which is set to begin June 22.
