Man Involved in Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Shooting Released on Bail

A 22-year-old man accused of a highway shootout was granted bail on Oct. 12 after his defense counsel informed the court that the defendant did not initiate the gunfire.

Charges against the Greenmount West resident were reduced from attempted murder to weapons charges, including firearm use during a felony violent crime, having a handgun in a vehicle, having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and discharging firearms. He is also charged with multiple counts of assault and reckless endangerment.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Philip Jackson presided over Wednesday’s bail review when defense attorney Robert Cole detailed the incident that occurred in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel on July 1. Cole said the defendant was driving in the tunnel and cut off by another driver who fired shots at his client’s vehicle.

The other drive later contacted the Baltimore Police Department but stopped cooperating with officers when they began asking several questions. Cole said police reviewed the tunnel’s video surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses who said the gunfire was initiated by the other driver.

“As the charges now reflect, the attempted murder has been dropped,” said Cole, recommending the defendant be released on electronic home monitoring.

The prosecutor, who was standing in for the assistant state’s attorney assigned to the case, asked that the defendant remain held without bail. However, the prosecutor did not provide a reason why.

Judge Jackson agreed to release the defendant on bail given his lack of a criminal history. The defendant is next scheduled to appear in reception court on Jan. 4, 2023.
