Man Charged With Attempted Murder Rejects Plea

A man charged with attempted murder rejected a plea and had a trial date set during reception court on Sept. 30 at Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Eric Harcum, 53, is charged in connection with an incident on March 5. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first and second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure. 

The prosecution offered a plea of life, suspending all but 25 years, and five years of probation for one count of attempted first-degree murder. This also includes conditions of alcohol and drug screening and treatment, compliance with mental health treatment, and restitution, if necessary. 

Harcum did not accept the offer on Thursday. His defense attorney, Euphus Belu-John, had recently inherited his case and had not heard the offer yet. Belu-John had a colleague standing in for him.

Prosecution noted that this trial should be specially set because the victim and their family moved to Texas as a direct result of this attack, and they want to make sure they are able to testify at the trial.

Judge Melissa Phinn scheduled a trial to begin on April 5, 2022.
