A man accused of threatening to kill his girlfriend while armed accepted an amended plea deal on Wednesday in Baltimore City Circuit Court.
The prosecution offered Stephen Walker, 38, a sentence of eight years, suspending all but 18 months, followed by three years of supervised probation upon release for the charge of firearm possession as a prohibited person. Walker can’t own a firearm due to an armed robbery charge from an incident that occurred on July 23, 2009. Per the terms of the deal, Walker is also required to register to the Maryland Gun Offender Registry, maintain no contact with the victim, and receive necessary drug and alcohol abuse treatment.
Walker, who initially faced additional charges of having a handgun on his person, firing a gun in Baltimore City, and illegal possession of ammunition, could have faced a 15-year maximum penalty had he opted for trial. As part of the deal, the prosecution agreed to nolle prosequi, or formally abandon, Walker’s remaining charges.
During the May 28 hearing, Walker told the court he previously received treatment through Gaudenzia Behind the Wall, an effort from the Gaudenzia alcohol and drug abuse treatment center to help incarcerated individuals recover. Upon release, however, Walker said he stopped receiving treatment.
Walker, who is represented by defense attorney Mary L. Patton, was charged in connection to a non-fatal shooting incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 9, 2024. According to charging documents, Baltimore police officers responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Normount Court that Walker shared with his girlfriend and her son. Upon arrival, they observed Walker leaving the residence, followed by his girlfriend, who informed officers he had a gun.
Walker fled and was apprehended approximately 20 feet from the residence. Officers canvassed the area and recovered a black Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard .38 revolver with one live round in the chamber.
Walker’s girlfriend testified she and Walker were engaged in a verbal argument around 1:30 a.m., when Walker grew upset and entered the bathroom. She heard Walker chambering a bullet, opening the front door, and firing one round.
She recounted that Walker then re-entered the apartment and sat silently on a couch in the living room, holding the gun but not pointing it. He eventually told her, “Bitch, I’ll kill you in this house.”
Walker’s girlfriend called the police. Her 15-year-old son was also in the house during the incident, and corroborated his mother’s testimony.
Walker, who appeared intoxicated, was taken to Sinai Hospital for treatment. He was later booked at the Central Booking & Intake Facility.
Judge Piper F. McKeithen presided over the hearing. The court has not yet set a sentencing date for Walker.
