Man Accused of Shooting at Family Gets Retrial Date

On Oct. 16, a Twenty-two-year-old attempted murder defendant appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn to receive a new trial date.

Delmel Johnson is charged with attempted first-degree murder, four counts of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, attempted armed robbery, firearm use in a felony violent crime, robbery, reckless endangerment, having a handgun on his person and discharging firearms in connection to a December 2018 incident outside Mondawmin Mall on the 3200 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway.

Johnson and his attorney, Robert Linthicum, will appear for his trial on Feb. 5, 2024, before Judge Videtta A. Brown.

Per D.C. Witness previous reporting, Johnson is accused of accosting a family of four that was leaving Mondawmin Mall on Dec. 9, 2018. He allegedly shot into the family’s car at a stop light, hitting the father and his young daughter.

Johnson was found guilty of four counts each of second-degree attempted murder, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, reckless endangerment, attempted robbery, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, having a handgun on his person and discharging firearms on Dec. 11, 2019.

The Appellate Court of Maryland granted Johnson’s appeal to overturn his conviction in August 2022 because he was involuntarily absent at an evidentiary suppression hearing.
