Man Accused of Shooting 52-Year-Old in July Gets May Trial Date

A trial date was set for a 54-year-old Baltimore man accused of an attempted murder that occurred in July 2022.

According to Fox 45 News, James Wilkes is facing charges of attempted murder, assault, and several weapons charges after he allegedly shot a 52-year-old man around 6:45 p.m. on the 600 block of North Eutaw Place last July.

During reception court on Jan. 5, Wilkes rejected the prosecution’s plea offer of life, suspending all but 30 years for attempted first-degree murder, a concurrent five years without parole for firearm use in a felony violent crime, and a consecutive five years without parole for firearm possession with a felony conviction.

The plea would also include a stay-away order, five years of supervised probation, and a requirement to register as a gun offender.

Wilkes also told Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn that he was upset with his lawyer, Dalia Weintraub, having “never seen her before.” After a brief discussion between Wilkes and his defense counsel, a trial date was scheduled for May 15 before Judge Dana Middleton.
