Man Accused of Murdering His 75-Year-Old Mother Remains Incompetent to Stand Trial

A Baltimore man accused of his 75-year-old mother’s murder last December was found incompetent to stand trial, according to a report from a psychiatric hospital in Howard County.

During mental health court on April 26, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale Rasin informed the prosecution and defense attorney Sharon Bogins Eberhart that the court received a report from Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup that found 52-year-old Kevin Burke incompetent to stand trial yet restorable following a mental health evaluation.

Judge Rasin said she expects Burke to cooperate with hospital staff and take his medication while he remains committed to the Maryland Department of Health. A date for a follow-up hearing was not discussed, nor is any hearing currently scheduled on the Maryland Judiciary website.

Baltimore Police previously identified Burke as a suspect after reporting to a home on the 2400 block of Gainsborough Court and finding Stewartress Burke, his mother, with signs of trauma to her upper body. Burke told officers that he assaulted his mother during an argument, which led to her death.
