On April 3, Mumwaldi Kearney appeared in mental health court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin for his annual review.

Kearney, 51, is charged with first-degree murder and having a deadly weapon with intent to injure in relation to a April 12, 2021, incident.

After analyzing reports from Clifton T. Perkins Hospital, a maximum security psychiatric facility, Judge Rasin found Kearney is now mentally competent to stand trial and participate in his defense.

Kearney agreed to remain in the hospital for close monitoring and a not criminally responsible (NCR) evaluation.

According to previous reports, Kearney allegedly stabbed his 68-year-old mother, Shari Smith, inside of their home on the 4400 block of Manorview Road.

The next date is set for June 5.
