Garry Morris, 25, was sentenced to life by Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Nicole K. Barmore on Sept. 3 for the murder of Amare Burruss, 20.
Burruss was fatally shot during a drive-by shooting that occurred Dec. 7, 2022, on the 4200 block of Pimlico Road.
Morris was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of firearm use in a felony violent crime and having a handgun in his vehicle. He was found guilty on March 27 of both murder charges. Morris must serve half of his life sentence before he can be considered eligible for parole.
Burruss’ immediate family members delivered heartfelt victim impact statements to the court.
“ I have lost a job, time,” said Burruss’ mother. “Sometimes I don’t even know what day it is, what month it is.”
Another family member described the impact that Burruss’ loss had on their health.
“My blood pressure has gone up over 200,” they said. “I never had blood pressure problems before.”
Defense attorney Mary Patton highlighted the personal growth Morris has demonstrated over the past three years, noting his deep remorse and his expressed desire to pursue further education and learn a trade.
Though Patton requested a life sentence with all but 40 years suspended, Judge Barmore emphasized the gravity of the crime and imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the law.
