Jury Selection Postponed in Northwood Drive Attempted Murder Case

Jury selection in the trial of Kyree Brannon was postponed one day on Feb. 19 after the court denied a prosecution request for postponement.

Brannon, 18, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and four firearm violations in connection to a non-fatal shooting incident that occurred on the 5800 block of Northwood Drive.

The state’s attorney brought the postponement request to reception court with the explanation that she was scheduled to begin a separate attempted murder trial today. Still, she was reprimanded by reception court Judge Melissa K. Copeland, who criticized her for failing to properly prepare for and schedule her assigned cases.

Following the denial, Judge Copeland sent the case back to Judge Yolanda A. Tanner, who was originally scheduled to hear the case.vJudge Tanner, who had already begun hearing other matters, was forced to postpone Brannon’s case until the following day.

Charging documents in Brannon’s case state that the defendant and the victim were walking along Northwood Drive when Brannon suddenly produced a gun and fired five rounds at the victim, striking him once in his upper left arm and once in his back. The victim, who was also 18 years old at the time, was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment.

Brannon was only 17 years old at the time of the crime, but will be tried as an adult. His trial is estimated to last three days, with an extra day scheduled to account for potential inclement weather over the weekend.
