Jury selection began in the attempted murder trial of Tyrone White before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer on Oct. 28.
White, 40, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a violent crime, reckless endangerment, and several other firearm-related violations.
According to charging documents, police responded to the 2400 block of Orleans Street on April 20 after hearing gunfire. Officers allegedly found a Black Nissan Rogue with the defendant inside, who immediately identified himself as the shooter.
The victim, a 40-year-old man, was located behind the block, suffering from a gunshot wound to the right leg. He told officers the defendant nearly struck him with his vehicle on the 2400 block of E. Fayette Street. When he later saw the same car parked outside a nearby restaurant, he approached the driver to confront him.
The victim claimed he was attempting to photograph the car’s license plate when he noticed a gun on the defendant’s lap. He told police he was standing by the passenger side door when White’s sister approached, questioned him, and pushed him. He said he pushed her back and ran, believing the defendant would shoot him.
The sister gave a different account, telling detectives she returned from ordering food to find the victim yelling and walking around the vehicle. When she tried to open the passenger door, she said the victim struck her with an open hand before running away. Witnesses told police they saw the victim yelling, walking around the vehicle, and hitting a woman before fleeing toward an alley, corroborating her statement.
The woman told police she observed her brother firing shots at the victim from inside his car. The gunfire also struck an occupied 2020 Chevrolet Malibu and shattered the window of a nearby home. Residents were inside the house at the time.
“I told him to leave my sister alone,” the defendant remarked to police when arrested.
A crime lab technician recovered six cartridge casings, four bullet fragments, and a loaded Ruger Max-9 pistol from the vehicle.
The trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 29 with opening statements.
