On Nov. 17, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Dana M. Middleton read a verdict of guilty for 53-year-old defendant Shawn Brewton.

Brewton was charged with first- and second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and possession with the intent to distribute a dangerous substance in connection to an incident on Aug. 11, 2021.

The jury found Brewton guilty of the second-degree murder of 38-year-old William Smith and not guilty of the rest of the charges.

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to a shooting at the 3500 block of West Belvedere Avenue. Upon arrival, the officers found the victim on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Sinai Hospital, and despite all efforts, he died.

Court documents revealed there was a domestic dispute between the victim, his ex-girlfriend and the defendant, which led to the shooting. Witnesses identified the defendant and 49-year-old co-defendant Michael Corprew as the two suspects involved in the incident.  Corprew previously refused to cooperate with the prosecution against Brewton as part of a plea deal, but since reversed his decision.
