On June 30, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Y. Ausby sentenced a murder defendant to 75 consecutive years in prison for killing his 33-year-old girlfriend, Breonna Rogers

Defendant Major Kinchen was found guilty of second-degree murder and two weapons charges on May 10 for shooting and hiding Rogers’ body at Druid Hill Park.

The prosecution requested that Kinchen’s charges be served consecutively because of the premeditation that went into hiding her body and lying about her whereabouts. However, defense attorney Matthew Connell argued that the charges run concurrently with each other because Kinchen, 33, was found guilty of second-degree murder, which means the crime wasn’t premeditated.

Rogers’ father testified that “No parent should go through that [the death of a child],” and her grandfather expressed that “she was so full of light.”

Other members of the victim’s family were verbally upset. When one of them was asked to leave, they shattered the glass on the door as they left. As the disturbances continued, the entire family was asked to leave. On their way out, one of the family members disappointedly stated, “This is all we have left.”

Judge Ausby sentenced Kinchen to 40 years for second-degree murder, 20 years for firearm use in a felony violent crime and 15 years for firearm possession with a felony conviction. All charges were set to run consecutively because she said that Kinchen had “complete disregard for this woman’s life.”
