Judge Schedules Motions Date for Murder Co-Defendants

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland scheduled a motions hearing date for two adult h defendants along with a juvenile allegedly involved in a murder on 800 block of West Lexington Street on Aug. 2.

Charles Bowen, 20, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and firearm use in a felony violent crime. 

Davon Butler, 18, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person, possession of a firearm as a minor and illegal possession of a regulated firearm. 

Butler and Bowen are co-defendants with a 17-year-old; they are all suspected of killing 19-year-old Darcell Mitchell on Feb. 20. 

The prosecution filed a joinder motion, meaning both Bowen and Butler’s cases may be tried together pending a judge’s decision. Bowen’s defense has filed an opposition to the request.

Judge Copeland set the motion’s hearing for Sept. 26 before Judge Sylvester B. Cox. After the hearing, counsel will return to reception court to find a trial date.

Bowen was represented by Daniel Mooney, while Butler was represented by Andre Mahasa Friday. 

According to a Baltimore Police Department press release, on Feb. 20, Southwest District patrol officers responded to the location of the incident. Officers found Mitchell suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
