Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn placed a homicide defendant’s case on the “needed coverage” docket on June 2, after she scheduled the defendant to begin trial at the end of the year.

Defendant Samuel Wise, who is represented by Staci Pipkin, is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted armed robbery, three counts of use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, three counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, first-degree assault, and first and second-degree escape in connection to the murder of 44-year-old Chesley Patterson on Jan. 23, 2022.

According to a Baltimore Police Department (BPD) news release, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 1700 block of Eastern Avenue for reports of a shooting. On arrival, officers found Patterson suffering from a gunshot to the chest.

On Friday, the prosecutor stated he had no plea to offer the 23-year-old defendant.

Judge Phinn scheduled the defendant’s next hearing for Nov. 27.
