Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lynn Stewart Mays rescheduled the jury trial of Angelo Jerome Riley Jr. on Dec. 4 to give the defense additional time to discuss a possible plea.
Riley, 27, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and armed robbery in connection to a drive-thru shooting at a McDonald’s restaurant on Jan. 31.
According to charging documents, Baltimore Police officers responded at around 3 a.m. to the McDonald’s located on the 6000 block of Moravia Road for a reported shooting. A female employee told police she was working the drive-thru when a man approached the window, pointed a handgun at her, and demanded she open the cash register.
The suspect allegedly fired one round into the restaurant floor, causing a ricochet that struck the victim in the left foot. He then reached through the window, grabbed the register, and fled. Video surveillance captured the suspect wearing a blue hoodie with a white logo, ripped light-colored jeans, and black tennis shoes.
Police tracked the stolen register using a built-in GPS device and recovered it on the 2700 block of Greenmount Avenue. Nearby surveillance cameras reportedly captured the suspect retrieving a large, reflective box resembling the register from the floor of a black vehicle.
A witness was shown the footage and identified Riley as the suspect, leading to his arrest.
Defense attorney John Deros told the court he had just finished a separate trial and was not adequately prepared to begin proceedings. He also noted that Riley is still considering a plea offer and “regrets his actions,” citing alcohol as a contributing factor.
“Continuing discussions would be fruitful,” Deros said while requesting the brief delay.
Judge Mays agreed to reschedule the proceedings to allow Riley time to consult with counsel.
The trial is expected to resume on Friday morning.
