Following a request from the prosecution, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland postponed the trial of Jerome Davis on June 2.

Davis, 35, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and other firearm charges in connection to a non-fatal shooting that occurred on October 30, 2024. Davis is represented by defense attorney Brandon Thornton.

The prosecution requested a postponement due to the lead detective’s being on paternity leave. There was also an issue with DNA evidence not being disclosed as required.

Judge Copeland granted the prosecution’s request but notified them that this would be the last permitted postponement.

Davis agreed to waive his right to speedy trial, allowing Judge Copeland to set a new trial date past his Hicks date of July 2. In Maryland, a defendant in a criminal case has the right to be tried within 180 days of the defendant’s or the defense attorney’s first appearance in court.

The trial is expected to begin July 23 and last until July 28.
