A defendant whose mental competence is in doubt appeared for a mental health evaluation before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Judge Gale E. Rasin on Jan. 29.
Tyrelle L. Fields, 40, dismissed his defense attorney on Dec. 16, 2024 and said at that time he wanted to represent himself. However, Judge Rasin was unable to reach a conclusion regarding Fields’ competency to stand trial and ordered that he return Feb. 26 for reevaluation.
Fields was arrested on May 26, 2021 for his alleged participation in a non-fatal shooting on May 5. He is charged with attempted armed first-degree murder, armed second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, use of a handgun in a crime of violence, illegal possession of a handgun, firearm possession with a felony conviction, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a gun, and having a gun on his person, in a vehicle, or in transport.
“The circuit court has not come to a definitive result and must have further evaluation,” said stand-in defense attorney Sharon Boggins.
Fields requested a new public defender at the hearing.
To speed up the evaluation process in accordance with medical regulations, Judge Rasin requested Fields’ medical records directly from Johns Hopkins Hospital.
