Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland postponed proceedings for defendant Keon Brooks, 20, on Oct. 22 as she considers whether his case will remain in Circuit Court or be transferred back to juvenile court.
Brooks is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, reckless endangerment, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault in connection with a non-fatal shooting incident that occurred late November in West Baltimore’s Mondawmin neighborhood.
During the reception court hearing, Judge Copeland addressed a scheduling issue after learning that Brooks had pending juvenile transfer cases, which created a conflict with his current trial schedule. The prosecution requested a postponement, and Judge Piper F. McKeithen set a hearing for Friday to determine the appropriate jurisdiction for the case.
Charging documents note that on Nov. 25, 2024, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert for gunfire in the area of the 2300 block of W. North Avenue. At the scene, police recovered 16 9mm shell casings and a weapon-mounted laser, but were unable to locate a victim.
Soon after, officers were notified that a shooting victim had walked into a nearby hospital for treatment. The victim advised that they were sitting in a parked vehicle when several suspects approached and began firing into the passenger side. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to both thighs, one elbow, and the lower back.
Brooks is one of three defendants charged in connection with the shooting. His co-defendants, Justin Griggs, 18, and Donte Mack, 23, face similar attempted murder and assault charges.
A motion hearing to suppress evidence is scheduled for Oct. 25 before Judge McKeithen.
