Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Robert K. Taylor denied bail on Sept. 17 for a 25-year-old man who allegedly shot and robbed a woman in March.
Baltimore resident Corey Pointer is charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, armed robbery, robbery, theft between $1,500 and $25,000, firearm use in a violent crime, having a handgun on his person, discharging firearms, drug possession with the intent to distribute, and firearm and drug trafficking.
Defense attorneys Michael Tomko and Lawrence Rosenberg represent Pointer; however, only Tomko was present during Friday’s bail review.
According to Tomko, Pointer had a disagreement with a woman and allegedly shot her multiple times on March 22. The victim later identified Pointer as the shooter to police.
WMAR Baltimore reported that the shooting of the 36-year-old woman occurred on the 500 block of Normandy Avenue.
Evidence of gunfire was found on both the defendant and victim’s cars as well as marjuiana in Pointer’s car, the defense attorney noted. However, Tomko said, the defense has received minimal discovery on the case, including interviews and ballistics.
“It’s rare that you get a young man at his age with no prior record that jumps to be an attempted murder,” Tomko said, recommending home detention.
The Maryland Judiciary website states that Pointer’s prior criminal record includes a sentence of nearly two months for marijuana possession and one year of supervised probation for a traffic violation stemming from an incident on Dec. 7, 2017.
The prosecution elaborated on the shooting, explaining that Pointer allegedly approached the woman and asked her for $40 that she owed him. When the victim denied owing him money and walked away, the defendant stole her backpack, which had a large amount of cash. Shots were then fired.
The victim, who the prosecutor said has known Pointer for a long time, was shot in the face, chest, hand, and ankle but survived.
“No one with clean hands was involved in the interaction,” Judge Taylor said.
Pointer is scheduled to appear in reception court on Oct. 14.
