A 19-year-old defendant received a trial date after rejecting a plea offer in Baltimore City Circuit Court Oct. 11.
Defendant Jamal Smothers, represented by defense attorney Judit Otvos, is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and possession of a firearm as a minor for a June 2024 incident.
The prosecution offered a plea for life, suspending all but 60 years, with five years of supervised probation for first-degree murder, a concurrent sentence of 20 years, the first five years without the possibility of parole for firearm use in a felony violent crime and a concurrent 10 year for first-degree assault. Smothers rejected the offer.
Judge Melissa K. Copeland scheduled Smothers’ four-day trial to begin on Jan. 27, 2025.
According to a Baltimore Police Department press release, Smothers was arrested after the murder of 19-year-old Deontay Towns on the 2600 block of Aisquith Street.
