Increased Security at City Courthouses? Unanswered Questions

What appeared to be enhanced security was observed outside Baltimore City Circuit Courthouses the week of April 20, including unmarked police vehicles and officers stationed along the perimeters of the Mitchell and Cummings Buildings.

A source close to the matter said the greater police presence likely followed a threat made against a judge.

A spokesman from the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office referred Baltimore Witness to the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office which handles court security but the agency didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Multiple judges were absent from the courthouses, attending a Thursday and Friday conference on the Eastern Shore. The resulting postponements for criminal, mental health, and reception court hearings were apparently unrelated to any security issue.
