Larry Winder III, 33, is facing a retrial on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting his fiancée in the head on Aug. 20, 2023. The original trial, held in May 2024, ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

During reception court on May 12, defense attorney Roland Harris filed a motion of dismissal. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland ordered Winder and Harris to return to court on May 29 before Judge Yolanda A. Tanner to discuss the motion. Unless the motion proceeds, Winder will be retried July 23 before Judge Brooke M. Murdock. The prosecution requested four days for trial proceedings.

According to charging documents, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to an alleyway in the 4800 block of Beaufort Avenue for a report of an assault. Upon arrival, they located a female victim, later identified as Winder’s fiancée, suffering from an injury to her head. Officers observed blood on the front porch and rear door of the residence.

Medics transported the victim to Sinai Hospital, where a CAT scan revealed bullet fragments in her head. She was transferred to the intensive care unit for further treatment of a small fracture on her left frontal lobe and a small skull fracture.

Winder faces multiple charges, including attempted first- and second-degree murder and assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and ammunition, having a handgun on his person, discharging a firearm within Baltimore City, and firearm use in a felony or violent crime.

The outcome of Winder’s May 29 motion hearing will determine whether the case proceeds to trial in July or reaches resolution beforehand.
