Two Baltimore men accused of conspiring to assault a man in the Greenmount West neighborhood on April 24 are set to return to court Sept. 23 for a motion to join their cases for trial.
Nicholas Keating, 37, and Antonio Courtney Manley, 46, face charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and felony firearm use, as well as various firearm and conspiracy violations.
The day of the incident, officers responded to an aggravated assault on the 100 block of E. Lafayette Avenue and located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower back. He advised he was shot earlier that night but did not notify police and was listed in stable condition.
The same day, officers patrolling E. North Avenue heard gunfire on the unit block and located Keating hiding nearby with a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun on his person. A Canik 9mm handgun was recovered from the basket of a nearby electric bicycle, and was allegedly traced to Manley. Investigators also recovered 12 9mm shell casings from the crime scene, as well as video footage capturing the entire incident.
The victim was observed arguing with Keating and walking away. An individual identified as Manley was seen producing a handgun and shooting at the victim before Keating allegedly joined the attack continuing to shoot. After the victim fell to the ground. Keating began approaching, but patrol units responded almost immediately, with Keating allegedly fleeing the scene southbound on Lovegrove Street.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland presided over proceedings. During Keating’s previous court appearance on July 23, defense attorney Arthur Baker had requested further time to prepare a motion for joinder.
