On June 6, an accused non-fatal shooting defendant rejected a plea offer before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn.

Shannon Colbert and his defense counsel Benjamin Charlton, rejected a plea of 15 years, suspending all but five years without the possibility of parole, and three years of supervised probation for possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, and a concurrent sentence of three years for having a loaded handgun on his person.

Upon release, the defendant would have also been required to register as a gun offender.

Judge Phinn set the 26-year-old defendant’s trial for Aug. 30 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia Jones.

Colbert is charged with possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, having a loaded handgun on his person, having a handgun on his person, discharging a firearm, having a detached magazine, and illegal possession of ammunition in connection to an incident on Dec. 16, 2022.

According to court documents, an officer with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) was on patrol when a witness told him that someone was pointing a gun and firing at a kid near a gas station on the 1800 block of Bloomingdale Road. Police later arrested Colbert, who they say fit the description after he attempted to run away and to avoid arrest.
