Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland postponed the trial of 23-year-old K’Hova Barfield on Aug. 4 following a request from the defense.

Barfield is charged with discharging a firearm, firearm use in a drug trafficking crime, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute and other related handgun charges in connection to a non-fatal shooting that occurred Jan. 1 on the 400 block of W. Saratoga Street.

According to charging documents, officers located Barfield walking eastbound on Saratoga Street with a gunshot wound to the left eye after hearing gunfire in the area.

Barfield’s blood trail led officers to a trash can where a 9mm handgun was found, along with a plastic bag containing over 50 jugs of crack cocaine.

Surveillance footage allegedly showed Barfield engaging in a verbal altercation with two unknown individuals before falling to the ground and going toward the location where the handgun and cocaine were recovered.

Defense attorney James Sweeting III said a reason for the postponement is inadequate medical care for Barfield since the shooting. Sweeting said that Barfield has continuously lost weight, has lost vision in his left eye and suffers from seizures.

Sweeting intends to communicate with a social worker before trial to formulate a trial plan.

Barfield’s three-day trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 25 before Judge Michael A. DiPietro.
