A Baltimore Police Department (BPD) detective provided details of a homicide investigation during a hearing on Sept. 24 in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The defendant, 30-year-old Kwante Betters, is accused of murdering the victim, 29-year-old Stephon Stinnett, during a shooting that took place on the unit block of Custom House Avenue in September 2023, according to the statement of charges.

Betters’ counts include first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and firearm possession with a felony conviction.

“When we got to the crime scene, we noticed the victim right away and that he’d been shot,” the witness said during his testimony. “After calling 911 when the victim was transported to the hospital where he passed away, we studied the camera footage and it matched Betters’ description.”

In response to the witness’s claims, Betters’ defense attorney Michael Tomko stated that while Betters’ description matched the person who killed Stinnett, there still was not proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Betters was responsible.

Betters’ case was heard in front of Judge Yolanda A. Tanner.
