A conflict of interest led defense attorney Robert D. Cole, Jr. to recuse himself from shooting defendant Kevin M. Hawkins Sr.‘s case on May 20. In order to have enough time to acquire new counsel, Hawkins waived his right to speedy trial and agreed to postpone his case.
Hawkins, 52, is currently facing two attempted murder charges, two firearm offenses, and two counts of first-degree assault for allegedly attempting to shoot his two sons while intoxicated. The incident occurred on Oct. 17, 2024, and followed a verbal altercation at Hawkins’ residence in the 5600 block of Greenfield Avenue.
Cole ultimately withdrew himself from the case after learning he previously represented one of Hawkins’ brothers in a separate case.
According to Maryland law, defendants have the right to be tried within 180 days of their initial appearance in court. Hawkins agreed to set the trial past his 180-day deadline of June 4.
Hawkins is set to reappear in court May 30 before Judge Melissa K. Copeland to receive a new trial date.
