A 37-year-old defendant accused of shooting a man in the back earlier this year is expected to go to trial for attempted murder this November in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The prosecution offered Anthony Wayne Schaaf a plea of 50 years, suspending all but 30 years, and five years of supervised probation for attempted first-degree murder followed by a concurrent sentence of 10 years, the first five years without parole, for firearm use in a felony or violent crime.

The defendant rejected the offer alongside his attorney, John Deros.

Additional evidence discovery, including body-worn camera footage and medical records, is expected for defense counsel’s review by the end of the day, the prosecutor noted.

In an Aug. 18 pre-trial conference, Judge Melissa K. Copeland and counsel agreed on a three-day trial, beginning Nov. 4, before Judge Piper F. McKeithen.

Just after midnight, on Jan. 30, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers were alerted of a shooting on the 3400 block of E. Fayette Street, where they found a 30-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his lower back. Court documents state that after receiving treatment, the victim told police he was walking behind a short man who was wearing a black mask. The alleged shooter then turned around and shot at the victim as he attempted to run away.

Recovered city surveillance footage showed the victim running on the 3500 block of Esther Place before he momentarily stood in the middle of the street on the 100 block of Highland Avenue. Documents state the victim was then seen walking into a Royal Farms where he asked an employee to call the police.

City surveillance footage led police to Schaaf who was allegedly seen removing his mask at Joe’s Bar on S. Highland Avenue after the shooting.
