Baltimore CIty Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin deemed Amith Kumar, 45, as ‘dangerous’ in his sixth month mental health evaluation.
Kumar is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and the use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure. He was found incompetent to stand trial in January of this year.
Kumar remains incompetent to stand trial and will remain in an inpatient care unit until his next evaluation, which is expected to happen on July 30.
In order to stand trial a person must understand the charges against him and help his attorney craft a defense.
According to charging documents, on Jan. 11, 2019, a sergeant of the South Eastern District contacted the homicide unit to report a possible murder on the 6700 block of Holabird Avenue.
Ankita Verma was found lying on the floor with multiple lacerations and stab wounds to her body. A neighbor reported that Verma had not made it to work that day and was concerned about her whereabouts. Verma lived in the residence with her husband, Kumar. Neighbors reported a history of domestic violence.
Investigators found obvious signs of struggle in the room and a kitchen knife in the sink with Verma’s hairs on it.
Surveillance footage allegedlu shows Kumar leaving the residence around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 11 and then no one entering or leaving the residence until the neighbor and landlord get there later that night.
A family member reported that Kumar had allegedly called them around 2:00 a.m. the same day and admitted to stabbing and killing his wife.
