Defendant Pleads Guilty in 2021 West Baltimore Street Attempted Murder Case

On Jan. 5, a Baltimore man charged with attempted murder pleaded guilty before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawerence Daniels.

Niyon Matthew and his defense counsel Josh Insley, took a plea of life, suspending all but ten years with five years supervised probation for first-degree attempted murder; a concurrent ten years with the first five years without the possibility of parole for the use of a firearm during a felony violent crime; and a concurrent ten years with the first five years without the possibility of parole for possession of a firearm with a felony conviction in connection to an incident on April 20, 2021.

Upon release, the 21-year-old defendant must register as a gun offender, stay away from the victim, and undergo drug and alcohol abuse treatment. The defendant is also required to seek mental health treatment.

According to court documents read by the prosecutor, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 1700 block of W. Baltimore Street for reports of shots being fired. On arrival, officers spoke with the victim who explained that while driving he saw the defendant sitting in a white vehicle outside a store.

The victim claimed he was heading to the store the defendant was sitting outside of but decided not to go inside due to having a prior dispute with him.

The victim informed the officers that the defendant shot at him but missed as he was driving away.
