Willie Tyson, 65, appeared in reception court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on June 16. Tyson is charged with first-degree assault after an argument between him and a resident at the apartment complex where he worked turned sour.
The victim described reaching out to Tyson, the building maintenance worker, about his apartment bathtub that had been broken for around two weeks. The argument, on Jan. 22, quickly escalated and moved outside of the apartment building located on the 1400 block of E. Madison Street.
According to charging documents, area surveillance footage showed Tyson striking the victim on the left side of his face with a handgun, causing the firearm to discharge. When police arrived at the scene they found the victim with scrape marks on the left side of his face consistent with the footage and a single 9mm casing.
In court, Tyson was presented with an offer of 15 years for the charge of first-degree assault and a consecutive 20 years, suspending all but five, for use of a firearm in a crime of violence. Tyson would not be eligible for parole during the first five years of his sentence.
With the advice of defense attorney James Sweeting III, Tyson rejected the plea and is now scheduled for a two-day trial at the end of August.
