Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Troy K. Hill ruled on April 22 that a defendant be held without bail until his upcoming trial date.

Darius Williams, 37, has been in prison for three years following his 2023 murder conviction. Williams allegedly stabbed Eric Jones, 49, over 20 times, killing him. Williams was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison, the maximum sentence for the crime.

Williams’ case was appealed Aug. 15, 2023 because an eyewitness who testified against him in the original case was not actually present at the crime scene.

Defense attorney Linda Zeit argued that Williams should be released, as he has no prior violent felony convictions and has been a model inmate for three years. She maintained that Williams was wrongfully charged.

The prosecutor argued that Williams should not be released because of the severity of the crime, and that the evidence presented at trial was sufficient to sentence him.

Judge Hill sided with the prosecution and did not change Williams’ bail. The trial date will be scheduled in reception court on May 23.
