A non-fatal shooting suspect charged with possession of a handgun was denied bail on April 12 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie Hong.

Malik Gilbert, 25, is charged with possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, having a handgun on his person, and illegal possession of ammunition in connection to an incident on Jan. 18.

Gilbert’s defense attorney, Rodney Gray requested his client be held on house arrest until his September trial date. The defendant is also dealing with medical issues from the shooting and would like to have those needs addressed.

The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant was on probation at the time of the incident. He also has four other pending matters before the court and a history of missing court dates.

Judge Hong deemed the defendant a risk to public safety and denied bail.

According to prosecutors, police arrived at the scene following a shot spotter alert on Jan. 18. They found one man suffering from a gunshot wound with a trail of blood leading to a vacant home. The defendant was in the home also suffering from two gunshot wounds.

In the basement of the vacant home, police found a bloody handgun. It is unclear if the gun belongs to the defendant or was used to shoot the individual found at the scene. DNA analysis is still processing in the case.
