On. Jan 22, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland scheduled the trial of a 30-year-old non-fatal shooting defendant who was recently found competent.

Marlon Veney is charged with possession of a rifle or shotgun with a felony conviction, reckless endangerment, discharging firearms, illegal possession of ammunition, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and two traffic violations in connection to a Jan. 15, 2022, incident.

After being committed, Veney was found competent to stand trial on Oct. 4, 2023.

Though stand-in defense attorney Julie Shapiro proposed an April trial date, that was not soon enough for Judge Copeland. After Shapiro cleared the date with Veney’s lawyer, Karyn Meriwether, Judge Copeland scheduled Veney’s two-day trial to begin on Mar. 13 before Judge John A. Howard

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Waterview Avenue and Annapolis Road for a report of a car accident and a shooting. The 911 caller reported that after the accident, the at-fault driver shot into oncoming traffic. Investigators recovered 12-gauge shotgun shells at the crime scene.

When Veney checked himself into a hospital with gunshot wounds, his mother came forward and allegedly told investigators he didn’t have permission to drive the car.
